From chalk marks to chocolates
Many of us associate Advent calendars with wrapped chocolates or tiny gifts hidden beneath numbered doors, but this tradition began in the simplest of ways. In the mid-19th century, German families started counting the days until Christmas by tallying chalk marks on a door or wall. Some began lighting candles or adding a religious image for each day leading up to December 25.
A German printer named Gerhard Lang is credited as the inventor cardboard calendars with little cutout doors, and hid a devotional picture or bible verse behind each one. As a child, his mother sewed 24 cookies onto the lid of a box, allowing him to eat one of them each day during the Advent period.
In the 1950s, President Dwight Eisenhower began the advent calendar tradition with his grandchildren, which sparked popularity in the U.S. By that time, advent calendars were more likely to include small toys or chocolates behind each door.
These days, you can find advent calendars in every shape, design, and color. Ours are specially selected to inspire creativity, promote family togetherness, and of course, ignite holiday cheer.
5 benefits of using an advent calendar with your tots
- Offers valuable learning opportunities
From counting –both forward and backwards – to using manual dexterity to manipulate each tiny door, knob or pocket and grasp what’s inside, little ones get rewarded for practicing their fine motor coordination. Kids can learn about the days of the week, months of the year, the number of hours in a day. If you have more than one child, they can practice taking turns — another worthwhile skill.
2. Teaches patience
Waiting for 24 days until Christmas can feel like forever, but advent calendars teach kids the art of patience. They might want to peek behind all the Advent calendar doors at once, but the fact that they need to wait, control their impulses, and restrain themselves is a huge task, one that will ultimately be rewarded. Plus, they’ll feel good knowing they succeeded in containing themselves.
3. Provides a launch pad to explore values and practice gratitude
Advent calendars offer an opportunity for reflection and discussion about joy, hope, love, and family. As you count down, add themes to discuss at dinner with the family. What does Christmas mean to you (in addition to presents)? What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Your favorite holiday food? How do people express love and care other than giving gifts?
Before opening the day’s door, have each child mention someone or some thing for which they feel grateful. Practice ways to gratefully and politely accept gifts, and find humor whenever possible (“Oh my gosh, Mom. Thank you SO MUCH for the underwear!”) Use these days not only for a count down, but also for conversation opportunities. They’ll help prepare everyone for a truly joyful holiday.
4. Creates a meaningful tradition
Instead of celebrating for a single day (or two or three), you get to begin a tradition that lasts the entire month. Whether you purchase a new advent calendar each year or use the same one and fill it with fresh treats and gifts, you’ll establish a long-lasting tradition that your children will look forward to year after year.
5. Brings the family together in a joyful way
Gathering around the calendar to count down to the family’s favorite holiday builds excitement and is an uplifting way to start each day. The simple, unfettered pleasures of anticipation and discovery stretch out the holiday season, creating family connection well before the big 2-5.
