GO SAFARI

Safari

A safari or jungle themed nursery is definitely one for the animal lovers. And why not? Soft plush animal toys, art prints and other decorative accessories really do go hand-in-hand in a children’s room. However, with any themed nursery, I always recommend a tempered approach because you don’t want the room to date quickly—what we’re looking for is ‘Safari Chic’ which is the modern, more sophisticated approach as opposed to just a wild menagerie of animals.

Start by bringing the outdoors in and opt for warm wooden furniture. Whether your preference is walnut or birch, you will want to introduce wooden elements. The Ubabub Nifty Timber Crib in walnut is the perfect piece to create a rich, timbered look. Next, start to introduce hints of luscious green and sandy brown tones in your soft furnishings and accessories like the Babyletto Spruce Tree bookcase and Flensted Giraffe mobile. And of course, every nursery and children’s room needs a playful and fun element. The Fiona Walker England range of animal heads – like the mini lion and zebra options available, are the ultimate wall feature to finish the room.

Stylist Tip: Adding in complementary furniture and accessories in oatmeal and natural tones will ensure the room has a refined feel, which is what you want for a classic take on a themed room design.

MUTED PASTELS

StokkePetitPehrSleepiMiniFittedSheetStork3

Pastels in pink, blue, mint, lavender and lemon will always be a popular color scheme when it comes to a nursery. Blue and mint is a cool combination for the boys, while it’s hard to overlook the color pink for girls—especially while it is having a moment as one as of the biggest color trends in recent years, and with no sign of it fading for the year ahead.

The challenge you encounter when decorating with sorbet hues is making sure the end result doesn’t look too sickly sweet. So, what works well is taking a more subdued approach and balancing the color palette with natural and whitewashed woods, paired with lots of sumptuous neutral textures. The Babyletto Dottie Bookcase and Stokke Sleepi bed or Sleepi Mini would sit pretty in either gender nursery as your hero furniture pieces. Add in accessories in muted tones in wool, canvas and linens, which will help to bring in that textural element. The Petit Pehr range of 100% wool rugs and Cam Cam Savannah Mobile strikes the perfect balance where a natural texture meets soft color.

Stylist Tip: The great thing about pastels is the world of possibilities—you can work with a single color or mix it up by combining your favorite gelato hues. I love the combination of on-trend blush pink and mint green to create a calm and tranquil space.

MODERN NEUTRAL

OeufPlayTableChairsLS1

If you are keeping the sex of your baby a surprise, or are looking to put together a gender-neutral room design, look no further than a modern neutral style. Not only does it translate well to a non-gender specific look, but also likely (generally speaking) to work seamlessly with the other rooms throughout your home. It also lends itself to the ever-so-popular Scandinavian inspired furniture and accessories that have been sweeping nurseries globally.

The key to mastering this look is to keep it fresh and airy in pared back shades of white and grey. By introducing furniture with touches of natural wood, it will help to add warmth to the monochromatic color scheme whilst bringing in a textural component. When selecting furniture, keep in mind that the design stays true to theme by being simple and streamlined—consider pieces like the Ouef Classic Crib and Mini Library in white and birch. Next, is picking simple and timeless pieces like the Lorena Canals Bereber Rug and Oeuf Play Table and Chairs, which are additions that you won’t tire of quickly due to their clean aesthetic.

Stylist Tip:A modern neutral style is uncluttered, so be sure to show some restraint when styling any open shelving. You’ll also need plenty of storage baskets and organizers to help keep things in order and concealed!

BOHO-INSPIRED

OeufSparrowCribBirchLS1

There are multiple layers required to pull together a boho-inspired room. A floral touch, a hint of something whimsical, lots of lush textures, along with worldly, vintage-inspired furniture and accessories will help create a room that is interesting and thought provoking. When looking for those one-off pieces, thrift-store shopping isn’t very practical when sourcing for a baby’s room, especially as safety standards are top priority. The good news is that lots of brands are creating modern takes on classic-vintage designs, like the Oeuf Sparrow Crib, so there is no need to compromise on safety and style. Brands like Olli Ella are also creating unique pieces like the Storie stool, which looks like it’s a flea market find, but upon closer inspection, has clever in-built storage and is available in a contemporary color palette of natural, pink and white. Another layer to this laid-back style is featuring that much-needed imaginative element, and it can be as simple as piece of wall-art to setting up a tee-pee in a section of the room. A tee-pee works magically in boho-themed room, as what might begin as a family reading spot, as your baby grows into a toddler it can easily morph into a treasure trove for playtime and dress-ups!

Stylist’s Tip: The beauty of boho is all in the details. It wouldn’t be a very successful ‘Bohemian-vibe’ if it didn’t have that world-traveller and earthy feel. Items like the Lorena Canals Natural Pouffe and Kaarol Rug will be the ‘pièce de résistance’ to tieing everything together.

POLISHED PREPPY

Litchfield-Crib-Campaign-Armoire-Shelving

Polished preppy is a style that translates well across both sexes, whether you are pulling together a boy, girl or a gender-neutral room design. It’s a smart and stylish look that can be adapted to suit a variety of color schemes, from restrained white, grey and oatmeal to bold color blocking in heritage green and classic navy.

Once you have committed to your color palette, the next step is choosing some key, statement furniture and bringing in lots of lovely, finer details with decorator items.

For that ‘wow factor’ look no further than the Duduc Litchfield Crib and Drawer Set in white and light grey—with its curved edges, detailed dresser handles, and sophisticated colors, it is the epitome of polished and preppy. It’s always a safe bet to buy statement pieces from the same collection to avoid furniture competing.

When I think of ‘preppy’ what immediately comes to mind is handcrafted designs and luxurious materials like cashmere and cable-knits, which is why I have included the Marie Chantal Angel Wing Cashmere Blanket and Lorena Canals Braided Rug in my edit. The key to nailing this look is remembering that ‘the devil is in the details’.

Stylist Tip:Take it up a notch by including that personal, bespoke touch, like monogramming on linen or my personal favourite is the Cut Arts Modern Silhouette print.

BEACH BABE

There are a few different ways to bring in a breezy beach style into your child’s room. There is the traditional coastal style, with a fresh and airy look in a mainly white color scheme and accompanying shades of pale blue. But by replacing pale blue for sandy hues, rattan and natural fibers will give it a rustic coastal angle that works seamlessly in a gender-neutral style nursery. If modern and graphic is more to your liking, then consider introducing the color navy and/or red and a classic stripe motif, which can be the perfect nod to a nautical theme.

Lastly, there is always a combination of all the above to create a bright and light modern coastal room. Select a crib like the Babyletto Hudson Crib in White and Natural, which nails the brief by being mostly white with sandy colored slats. Shades of blue and navy can be incorporated in an area rug and soft furnishings—these accessories can be an effortless way to add that playful salute to your theme. The boat featured on the rug or choosing bed linen with a striped pattern is subtle without committing to something too permanent.

Stylist Tip: While the traditional coastal colors are white and blue that doesn’t mean brighter shades like pink and turquoise can’t be introduced into your scheme.
