Buttery soft, insanely cute and all sorts of adorable, this year’s holiday collection features original illustrations that were painted exclusively for The Tot and are made from one of our favorite natural fibers: pima cotton!

While you may think pajamas are pajamas, the truth is: they’re not all created equal and that’s why it’s important to consider WHAT they’re made of and WITH. (While also considering if they’re going to bring ALL the holiday feels of course!)

Chemicals to avoid in pajamas

At The Tot, we never use or recommend anything that hasn’t passed The Tot Test. This means we’ve looked deep into third-party testing, examined ingredients lists and asked in-depth questions about a product’s composition to ensure it doesn’t contain any of the chemicals we avoid.

For sleepwear, we like to steer clear of the following chemicals:

Flame retardants

To pass certain safety regulations, pajamas must have a flame-resistant component. While we achieve this with snug-fitting designs, some brands use chemicals. Flame retardant chemicals have been linked to endocrine and thyroid disruption, impacts to the immune system, reproductive toxicity, cancer and adverse effects on fetal and child development.

Formaldehyde

Used to achieve wrinkle-resistance, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and very low levels can irritate and burn the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. Those with asthma may have exacerbation of symptoms when exposed to formaldehyde.

Harmful Phthalates

Present in some synthetic materials and dyes, many phthalates are known endocrine disruptors associated with asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity, type II diabetes, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.

Pesticides

Used in the cultivation of non-organic or non-pima cotton, pesticides and herbicides can prevent individual nerve cells from communicating with one another. They have also been linked to endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADD, autism spectrum disorder and lower IQ, impaired memory, severe depression, disruption of the immune system, paralysis and death.

Heavy metals

Often found in dyes and metal zippers, exposure to heavy metals can cause nerve damage, learning and behavioral problems, reproductive damage and irreversible brain damage.

Why we love pima cotton

Pima cotton is farmed without the use of pesticides, making it a naturally hypoallergenic choice for your family. Because babies and kids in particular have sensitive skin and respiratory systems, opting for as-clean-as-possible fabrics and dyes is really important.

For starters, babies and kids spend a lot of time in PJs. They also tend to suck on fabrics, which means they’re at risk for ingesting anything that may possibly leach. Thankfully, all HART + LAND PJs are made free from flame retardants, formaldehyde, harmful phthalates, pesticides and heavy metals!
