Non-toxic Baby Toys – Tot Gift Guide
Green Living expert, Aida Garcia-Toledo shares her picks for safe, fun and non-toxic baby gifts for the holidays.
The holidays are quickly approaching and we are starting to think about what gifts to get the little tots in our lives. So many fun, smart options – how do you choose that ‘perfect’ toy that your little one will love?
One important factor to choosing the right baby toy is product materials. You do not want to expose your young children to toxic chemicals, heavy metals or other harmful substances.
Toxic materials in toys? Yes, many toys sold today can actually expose children to a troubling number of chemicals. You can find everything from hormone disrupting chemicals to the infamous neurotoxin lead in common kids gifts. As parents, we need to do our homework before purchasing anything for our children because no one else will. Here is your cheat sheet to finding the best non-toxic toys.
HOW TO AVOID TOXIC CHILDREN’S TOYS:
- Avoid plastic toys, especially single-use cheap plastic
- Avoid metal trinkets, like children’s play jewelry. These products often contain cadmium, which is a known human carcinogen and has been linked to learning disabilities.
- Be wary of products that are made of polyurethane foam. These almost always contain flame retardant chemicals, which have been linked to learning disorders, cancer, hormone disruption, infertility and other serious health problems. The law now requires all foam products to have a label noting if chemical flame retardants are present. So always remember to read the label!
- Avoid toys that smell. If it smells like plastic it probably is made of PVC/vinyl – a known human carcinogen. If it smells ‘fruity’ the toy probably contains phthalates – known endocrine disruptors.
- Remember, a ‘BPA free’ label can still contain chemicals very similar to BPA and be just as bad since they too mimic your hormones.
HOW TO CHOOSE SAFE TOYS:
- Opt for natural wooden toys.
- Opt for soft cloth and plush toys (ideally organic).
- Choose water-based, non-toxic paints.
- Food-grade silicone is another safe alternative.
- Books (except water-proof plastic ones) are always a safe and great choice.
- Shop The Tot’s curated selection of high-quality, non-toxic toys. You’ll love there adorable and fun gifts for babies, toddlers and kids!
