While I know it’s easy to want to buy nothing but partywear and ridiculously cute skinny jeans for your kids, I’m here to tell you that you also need to focus on the basics. Now that I’m the mother of three, I see just how much my kids love being able to dress themselves. I’m also aware that we don’t always have time for a fashion montage movie scene before leaving the house.

By having easy to mix and match and pull-on-yourself basics in my children’s wardrobes, they’re able to gain independence and start expressing themselves through their fashion choices.

As someone who is openly passionate about what my children and I wear, I actually decided to create a line of basics called HART + LAND with The Tot last year. All made of organic pima cotton, this collection includes tops, bottoms, swaddles, PJs and hats. With pieces for all ages, I love watching my littlest (three months) snuggle in her bodysuits, while my older boys run around in their matching PJs that they don’t ever seem to want to take off. I recommend buying multiples of things you know your kids will love. I find I need more tops as they’re more likely to spill food on them or get paint on the sleeves.

Getting a newborn dressed and out the door can feel like a mammoth task, especially if you have older kids who still need your help tying shoes, packing their bags and combing their hair.
