Important Questions To Consider Before Furnishing Your Child’s Room

Furnishing your child’s room is an investment. Interior stylist Magdalene Liacopoulos shares what to consider as you select items for your newborn’s or big kid’s special space.

Since selecting furnishings for your child’s room not only stretches your wallet but also tugs on your heartstrings, it’s easy to get carried away with your purchases. If you can put sentimentality aside for a moment, your child’s room can become a practical and comfortable haven that grows and adjusts as they do.

Consider these fundamental questions before adding items to the cart:

Are the furniture pieces versatile?

When furnishing a bedroom, there is a laundry list of essential items, like a bed for sleeping, a dresser for clothing and so on. It might seem like a no-brainer decorating a nursery or a junior room, but the reality is that your child’s needs are constantly changing, which is why it’s important to note whether your furniture choices are versatile. One of the very first things I look at when I’m sourcing furniture for a nursery design is if the crib has the option to convert to a toddler bed and if the changing table has a removable topper. The same goes for a nursing chair: it’s important to think about how the chair will be used once you’re no longer nursing. The Babyletto Madison Swivel Glider in Bouclé is a great example of a beautiful piece that can be repurposed from the nursery to a nook in a master bedroom, the perfect spot to curl up with a good book.

Do the furnishings suit the space?

We’ve all been there when we fall in love with a piece of furniture, then once it’s delivered, what you had envisioned simply doesn’t work. Perhaps the colors and style clash, or the furniture is too big or small for the room. Consider the color, style and size when selecting furniture and ask yourself before purchasing if it coordinates with the room’s size and existing décor. Think about the layout of the room and always measure out the furniture before moving forward with a purchase. Don’t forget to allow for a little extra space near the doorway or between each piece of furniture to be able to move around with ease. Ensure that items are not taking up too much space or not quite covering enough. For example, a bunk bed might be a better choice for a shared bedroom rather than trying to squeeze in two twin beds. Finding the perfect size rug is also tricky, but as general rule it needs to be big enough to fit under some of the main furniture pieces or small enough so that it sits neatly in the centre of the room. Get measuring and work out what is best for the room.

How durable are the materials and construction?

One of the most important, if not the most important consideration when choosing your furniture is what is it made from and if it is good quality and durable. Where possible, opt for natural materials like sustainably-sourced wood furniture, 100% cotton bedding or rugs, and wooden and rattan toys in a non-toxic and child-safe finishes. Gather up as much information before you buy and read any product information available. The Tot’s Nursery Works Compass Rocker for example, looks like a beautiful cream-toned glider, a color that some might argue is an impractical choice with kids. Upon further reading, however, it is upholstered in a fabric that is water-repellent, stain-resistant and durable, making it an ideal choice after all.

Are the furnishings safe?

We’re often tempted to accept hand-me-downs or heirlooms from family and friends or scour online sites bargains, especially when needing to buy big-ticket items. However, before you say yes to these items, the first and most important step is to confirm whether they meet the current safety standards. If you’re purchasing an item second-hand, this information may not be as readily available.

Here are a few points to keep top of mind with regards to child safety when furnishing your child’s room:

Dressers: Whenever possible, ensure that they come with the restraints that allow them to be secured to the wall to avoid toppling (particularly important once your baby starts cruising or climbing the furniture).

Bookcases: Opt for something wall-mounted or low to the ground that can be easily reached.

Crib mattresses: Make that they aren’t too soft or sunken in areas, as this can be a hazard, while a second-hand crib and twin mattress both pose the potential health risk of dust mites or mold.
