While the holiday season is synonymous with festivities and cheer, it’s often a hurried, harried time for parents. Between shopping for food and gifts, preparing kids for Christmas break and finalizing holiday plans, finding a moment to breathe and simply be rarely rises to the top of the to-do list. That’s where the practice of mindfulness comes into play.

What is mindfulness?

Jon Kabat Zinn, Ph.D., known as “the Godfather of Modern Mindfulness,” defines mindfulness as “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.” Taking even a few minutes out of our day to be mindful helps us slow down, catch our breath, let go and relax — the perfect antidote for the nonstop holiday season.

Mindfulness & children

The practice of mindfulness is immensely beneficial for kids, helping them learn to self-soothe through breathing. Mindfulness helps evoke self-awareness, a sense of calm and well-being. It also helps children slow down, focus, learn self-regulation and patience.

Get mindful as a family

Sharing the practice of mindfulness as a family is beneficial on a variety of levels. Not only is it a great opportunity to bond and de-stress together, it also gives you the opportunity to model behavior you’d like to see in your children.
