Things to consider when shopping for a baby
When shopping for a baby, it’s important to remember that:
- Babies explore the world with their mouths, which means you’ll want to avoid giving them a teether, toy or bottle that contains any potentially harmful chemicals. This is particularly important for feeding products that can leach chemicals when heated.
- Babies spend a lot of time in bed and on the floor, which means they’re in close proximity to rugs, carpet, foam, wood, paint etc. Many mainstream products such as mattresses, car seats, furniture and even personal care products contain VOCS (volatile organic compounds) that can off-gas into a room and cause both short and long term health issues. Always opt for Low or No-VOC products where possible.
- Babies have thinner skin to accommodate all that growing! That means that when exposed to chemicals topically, they’re more likely to absorb them into their bloodstream than an adult, which is why you want to be mindful about the body washes and diaper creams you choose.
- Babies have extremely sensitive skin, which is why it’s wise to dress them in fabrics such as organic or pima cotton that have been farmed without the use of pesticides and haven’t been sprayed with flame retardants or anti-wrinkle chemicals like formaldehyde.
- Babies need help regulating their body temperatures. As a general rule of thumb, babies should wear one extra layer of clothing than you would. They should also only be in natural fibers as opposed to synthetic materials that could cause them to sweat and overheat.
- Babies grow a whole lot quicker than you think so when choosing a product (like a high chair or crib) try to get something that transitions to the next stage.
Chemicals to avoid in baby products
At The Tot, we never use or recommend anything that hasn’t passed The Tot Test. This means we’ve examined third-party testing, dissected ingredients lists and asked in-depth questions about a product’s composition to ensure it doesn’t contain any of the chemicals we avoid.
When it comes to baby products, we like to avoid the following chemicals:
Formaldehyde
Flame Retardants
VOCS
PVC
Harmful phthalates
BPA + BPS (bisphenols)
Lead and other heavy metals
Synthetic fragrances

Baby Grooming Kit
Did you know that just because your baby doesn’t have teeth doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be brushing their gums? (It’s okay, we didn’t know either!) Luckily, fridababy has everything you need to keep gums clean as well as a comb and brush for taming wild bed hair and clippers and a file to trim soft nails.
fridababy Baby Grooming Kit

Kimono Style Footed Bodysuit
‘Kimono style’ may sound oddly specific, but this is because newborns don’t really have necks. (They do, but everything is quite compacted still.) Until your baby stretches out, we find having kimono style onesies are more comfortable because they lay flat on their chest as opposed to a front snap or zipper that could potentially bunch up under their chin.

What your baby needs: 3 – 6 Months
From 3 months, your baby will claw their way out of their milk coma and warm your heart every time they crack a little newbie smile!
Depending on your sleeping arrangement, they may also be ready to start having a day sleep or even their night sleep in a crib. Since we all know sleep is one of the trickiest things to master, it’s a good idea to use a smart monitor like the Nanit, which helps track your baby’s sleep and offer real feedback and advice on what could have happened to wake them up. (e.g. room temperature, dropped pacifier, etc.)
You’ll also want to start doing daily activities to help them reach important developmental milestones. In our list below, you’ll find our favorite products for this exciting stage!
Best products to buy for a 3 – 6 month old baby:
- Convertible crib
- Non-toxic crib mattress
- Crib sheet
- Breathable pajamas & sleepsack
- Baby Monitor
- Baby Shusher
- Guided developmental activities and toys
- Playmat
Convertible Crib
The Million Dollar Baby Classic Tanner 3-in-1 Convertible Crib is a winner for multiple reasons.
- It converts into a toddler bed.
- It’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it’s been screened for over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs known to pollute indoor air.
Million Dollar Baby Classic Tanner 3-in-1 Convertible Crib
$499
Non-Toxic Crib Mattress
The Naturepedic Organic Breathable 2-Stage Baby Crib Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified as well as GOTS Certified Organic. Made in the USA, this crib mattress is designed to be extra breathable and easy to wipe clean.
Naturepedic Organic Breathable 2-Stage Baby Crib Mattress
$379
Crib Sheet
To help reduce the risk of SIDS, the only thing you need on your baby’s crib mattress is a snug-fitting bottom sheet. Because blankets can get kicked off (which makes baby cold) or accidentally pushed over their face (which can make it difficult to breathe), it’s a good idea to stick to a fitted sheet and infant sleeping bag.
Malabar Baby Fitted Crib Sheet
$26
Breathable clothing & Sleepsack
As mentioned above, when dressing your baby for bed, try opting for breathable fabrics such as organic cotton or bamboo from rayon. Now that your baby is slightly older and might be rolling over, you’ll want to stop using the SleepSack swaddle so that their arms can be free to push themselves up.
Two of our favorite baby basics brands are HART + LAND and Kyte BABY. All made with chemical-free fabrics, their pajamas, essentials and sleeping bags are insanely soft and refreshingly durable.

Baby Monitor
Some parents may opt for a baby monitor from day 1, but most of us felt like we didn’t really leave our baby’s side in those early days! However, once we did transition our baby’s to their own crib, we loved having a video monitor for peace of mind.
Recently, we’ve been obsessed with the game-changing Nanit. Designed to give a bird’s eye view of your baby’s crib, it also monitors room conditions, provides sleep tracking and analysis, has 2-way audio and nature sounds as well as smart sensors and notifications. Available in wall mount or floor stand versions.
Nanit Plus Smart Baby Monitor & Wall Mount
$299
Baby Shusher
Because this is a time where you might be sleep training or needing to comfort your baby in the car or stroller, you may want to get a Baby Shusher. Designed to mimic the sounds your baby heard while in the womb, it’s a #totmama favorite!
Baby Shusher

Around 6 months of age, many parents introduce solids along with breastmilk or formula! While this is a fun stage of parenting, it’s also wildly messy! Just in case you have no idea what we’re talking about, a splat mat is a mat that goes under a high chair to catch all the food that your baby will inevitably drop (or throw).

What your baby needs: 12 – 18 Months
One of the most fun parts about having a one year old is watching them take on the world!
Now that it’s slightly easier to get out and about, we found we liked swapping our Mary Poppins diaper bag (aka the Jem & Bea Jemima Bag) for their Denim Backpack! It kept our hands free so we could chase after our early walkers!
We also learned that when you’re on an adventure with your baby, you must always have at least these three things: snacks, wipes and a change of clothing.
Keep reading to see what else we love.
